Natural gas odour is smelling near the heater often indicate excess release from the main gas meter, or the heater's gas connection leaks.

A Generous amount of soapy water applied over the external cockvalve and over the heater valve's body, after 15 to 20 minutes stand by, if it shows gassing bubles is a clear sign of leak.

Cleaning:

Having the heater and its main return, and air ways regular cleaning, sanitising will improve the quality of the airflow that you are breathing in, by eliminate the support and build up of possible fungus and bacteria to reproduce from inside the system. Also getting rid of the collected dust and pollen. Theses built up of dirt and grime are the real risk for your health, carbon dioxide poisoning (ex: if return duct's air filter is blocked), and also the potential cause of system parts premature wear. Most expensive repairs come from system which is not appropriately maintening, and small problem that left too long has developing into a major fault, or multi-faults that beyond repairs.

Re-energise the system to general checking the system performance properties such as electrical running volatage, current and compare with OEM specifications, fan speed, register's discharge temperature, burner temperatures, flame colour, main gas valve and gas leak check with electronic detector and then soapy. Also Checking for excessive noise, abnormal vibration, system securing etc.. Record the finding for later logging.
